Non-Dominant Hand Training

New Opportunities Learning Centre provides Non-Dominant Hand Training for clients who have lost use of their dominant hand.  The purpose of our training is to ensure that the client is able to use their non-dominant hand to perform everyday activities.  Amongst these activities, students will learn handwriting, fine motor skills and one-handed keyboarding.

To achieve the results, we use a variety of recognized exercises to strengthen small and large muscle groups, we work on developing endurance, dexterity, and co-ordination.  In addition to the physical aspect of the training, we provide students with various assistive technologies such as a one-handed Keyboard and Voice Assisted software.

An occupational therapist will also attend our centre weekly to ensure that the proper exercises are being applied and that the therapy is progressing well.  It is also vital that RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury) does not become an issue in the newly trained hand.

As part of our motivational program, we invite guests from the Canadian Paraplegic Association (who have suffered severe loss of a hand) but who are currently functioning at a normal level and working, to come in and speak to our clients.  We think that seeing is believing.

This specialized training is integrated as part of our academic upgrading so that there is no down-time. Our students will work one-on-one to ensure that their needs are being met.  We also provide an ESL component that can run concurrently with the hand training.

Please call one of our centres for more details on this program.
