English for Health and Safety
With new immigrants making up a predominant portion of our workforce, employers are faced with many obstacles, communication being the one with the most impact.
Injuries cost employers money and time in fines, cause work interruption and affect productivity. Although companies are running WHMIS and health and safety training sessions, statistics show that over 300 employees die per year, and that over 280,000 more are injured. One of the main causes of these injuries are language/cultural barriers, and employees not understanding their safety rights. By simply addressing these issues, the opportunity for employers to lower their accident rates is huge.
The use of multilingual posters and resources are not enough to stop workers from being injured. In working with injured clients for the past 7 years, we have discovered that a significant number of immigrant workers come to work with barriers which employers are not aware of, some of these being the inability to read in their own language, low levels of education resulting in the inability to understand the highly technical language of safety manuals even in their own language, or too often misunderstand what they are reading.
Safety pays........
At New Opportunities Learning Centre, we have created a program to help employers ensure that all employees understand the health and safety materials, regardless of their academic levels or ability to read.
Our health and safety program is carried out on site, in conjunction with the employer's current health and safety training program. Material is broken down into manageable components and taught using explanation of vocabulary, terms, expressions and symbols. This facilitation is vital, it ensures that each employee understands every rule, regulation, legislation as well as their rights with regards to safety procedures. Companies who make health and safety a priority have fewer injuries than their competitors who do not.
Our program costs pennies compared to the cost of processing an injured workers. The program includes full support to help the company reduce injuries and therefore reduce costs and improve worker relations and productivity.
Please call one of our centres for a full outline of the program and help keep your workforce safe.
