Customer service for Hospitality Program
ASD stream with modified admissions and accommodations

 We are happy to offer a  Customer Service for Hospitality Wlorkshlop based program designed specifically for clients with  Autism, Aspergers and other Intellectual Disabilities.  Along with our partner Reach Toronto Autism Services for Youth and Adults  we are able to offer  this very unique program.    Our program is completely accommodated so that we can focus in on the obstacles faced by our clients with a spectrum disorder.    

In this program, students will learn the basics of customer service as it pertains to the hospitality industry, including recognizing problems, and solving them to the customer's satisfaction.  It also will deal with the various employment opportunities in the hospitality industry and touch on the requirements for employment for each area.

Why  Customer Service?

Customer  service  is about people skills, whether you are working on the front line of an organization or  behind the scenes,  customer service skills are  necessary in  providing external service to customers and internal customer service to colleagues and superiors.   Our program offers  a well rounded   customer service program, but social skills and communication skills as well as workplace skills will be part of the curriculum.  

Obstacles Encountered by ASD Students

(Based on the Diversity Report released by The Red Path Centre and University of Toronto in Feb. 2012: )
Post-secondary education involves personal, social, and academic challenges. Unconventional understanding and use of language, as well as difficulty interpreting and displaying nonverbal cues can lead to difficulties both inside and outside of classes. Social interaction during group work, presentations, and lectures may be especially challenging (Alcorn MacKay, 2010; Luckett & Powell, 2003; Taylor, 2005). Students with ASD may have problems managing courses unrelated to their interests and integrating their areas of focus into course expectations. This applies to completing tests and assignments, as well as interactions with classmates and teaching staff (Adreon & Durocher, 2007; Alcorn MacKay, 2010; Camarena & Sarigiani, 2009). In addition, many students with ASDs struggle with organization, study habits, writing and presentation skills (VanBergeijk, Klin, & Volkmar, 2008, p.30”

Our program will provide the necessary supports to address the obstacles outlined in the Diversity report.   In partnership with Reach we will ensure  success for our  students

If you have a  Mild  Intellectual Disability and  are thinking of  learning some new skills to  improve chance to gain employment, this program will provide you with a well rounded experience.

program requirements

• Be 18 years of age prior to commencing program
• Show proficiency in literacy and numeracy at a grade 9 level 
• Have a reasonable expectation of success based on social, communication and employability assessments
• Attend an admissions interview

Employment Opportunities
Successful  candidates of the program will have the opportunity to be employed in a variety of hospitality environments both in front end and back end of hotels,  tourism centres, tourism transportation services and restaurant/ food service industry  to name a few, including our own Sandwich N Such.
