ENGLISH/ESL
New Opportunities Learning Centre offers comprehensive English and English as a Second Language (ESL) training designed to bring all learners to a minimum of a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) Stage II, Level 5 competency. The program focuses on the following areas:
- Reading
- Writing
- Speaking (Conversation)
- Listening
- Grammar
- Pronunciation
Students are taught the “living” language; idioms, common vernacular, every-day usage and cultural learning play a key role in our ESL/English program for effective communication within the Canadian framework. Conversational English is also emphasized. Student texts and workbooks are correlated to the Canadian Language Benchmarks skills levels.
Once a student becomes reasonably fluent and comfortable with the English language, the lexicon and jargon of his/her NOC becomes a major element of his/her English program. Our goal is to provide students with the tools they need to successfully re-enter the labour market or to adequately prepare them for the next phase of their learning program.
Advanced English training is provided for students streamed for college/university entrance, with the main areas of focus being:
* Effective reading techniques (skimming & scanning)
* Report and essay writing
* Advanced grammatical structures
Students are tested on a monthly basis and assessed using the Canadian Language Benchmarks assessment tools and subject-specific tests . Extensive assessment is done on a semi-yearly basis using Canadian Language Benchmarks, CAAT, and Wechsler Individual Achievement Test,® Second Edition: Canadian (WIAT®-II)cdn assessment tools.
